Daniel Ramirez Medina was taken by ICE agents in the state of Washington. This 23 year old was granted deportation deferment under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA); a program created under President Obama.

Under Donald Trump, the deportation of over 700 immigrants has taken place in states spanning the entirety of the US.

Medina, who was lived in the US since he was 7 years old and has maintained no criminal record while living in America, was taken from his residence . He showed ICE agents his work permit, but was told: “It doesn’t matter, because you weren’t born in this country.”

Medina’s attorney, working for the Public Counsel’s Opportunity Under Law Project (OULP), has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, citing that their client is “presently detained without justification” detained by ICE, and his presence in America poses “no threat to national security or public safety.”

In contrast, Rose Richeson, spokesperson for ICE said that Medina is “a self-admitted gang member” who met ICE agents during “an targeting a prior-deported felon.”

Because Medina was in the vicinity, he became the target under order of Trump and is awaiting “the outcome of removal proceedings before an immigration judge with the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review.”

With Attorney General Jeff Sessions controlling the Department of Justice (DoJ), activists fear that DREAMers will be targeted because the Obama-era program allowed them to work and live in the US after passing background checks and without obtaining US citizenship.

There was approximately 750,000 DREAMers or potential DACA eligible people living in America.

Mark Rosenbaum, one of Medina’s lawyers said: “Mr. Ramirez unequivocally denies being in a gang. While in custody, he was repeatedly pressured by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to falsely admit affiliation. The statement issued tonight by Ms. Richeson of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is inaccurate.”

Rosenbaum continued: “Trust in our government depends upon the executive branch keeping its word. establishing DACA, the federal government created a clear and reasonable expectation among DACA recipients that they would be able to live and work in the United States without being subjected to arrest and deportation.”
