Pew Research Center (PRC) has released a study on American’s thoughts on foreign trade’s effect on US jobs and the results might surprise Donald Trump.

Back in July, at a rally in Phoenix , Trump told the audience that Mexicans are “taking our jobs” in manufacturing, and “taking our money”.

Trump continued: “The word is getting out that we have to stop illegal immigration. …We have a situation that is absolutely out of control. … We’re getting taken apart piece-by-piece slowly.”

On Twitter, Trump has been quite vocal about his stance on immigrants and the American job market.

The study published by PRC shows Americans disagree with Trump’s dire stance on immigrants working in the US.

But when it comes to the attitude of Americans toward immigrant workers, forty-two percent saw their contribution as positive. This is a big change in societal perspective from just a decade ago. Fifty-five percent of Americans felt that immigrants were impeding on American workers overall.

Zoe Baird, president of the Markle Foundation, sees these findings as proof that Americans understand “that diversity helps the American worker.”

Another tell that the majority of Americans do not agree with Trump’s exclusive immigration policies is that six percent more Republicans perceive immigrants positively.

Nicole Smith, chief economist at the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, said: “That’s a really significant finding. What politicians have been telling us about immigrants taking our jobs is not shared by the American people.”
