From the People that Brought You Brexit: UKIP Leader Insists Sun Causes Tides

The UK Independent Party (UKIP) MP Douglas Carswell made a bizarre statement regarding a fundamental understanding of lunar influence on tides – apparently he does not believe that the moon causes them.

In a brazen move of impressive ignorance, Carswell challenged Paul Nightingale, a scientist from the Sussex University Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), to prove that the moon controls the ocean tides; and doubled down by suggesting that the sun was the actual cause of tidal phenomenon.

Carswell tweeted that it is “the gravitational pull of the sun” that causes the tides, but “the moon’s gravity does spring/heap tides”. He was then “surprised” when Nightingale refuted his “idea [the] sun’s gravity causes tides”.

Remember that this is the same guy who tweeted back in May of this year that he can run faster as long as he’s wearing his “red @vote_leave cap” as opposed to the black one.

Carswell being the leader of the organization that pushed racially charged nationalism to the point where the angry Caucasian Britons banded together and voted to leave the European Union (EU) and completely inept at elementary-level science is not shocking when you consider that UKIP has a history of getting it wrong when it comes to scientific facts.

Two years ago, David Silvester, former UKIP Councilor, wrote to a local newspaper wherein he blamed floods on same-sex marriage.

Nigel Farage, former leader of UKIP, tweeted his disdain for being caught in traffic, causing him to be late for a very important meeting. He blamed immigrants for straining the roadways.

And because of the congestion immigrants add to roadways, Farage told BBC Sunday Politics that a three hour ride took him six hours and fifteen minutes.

Farage said: “That has nothing to do with professionalism. What is does have to do with is a country in which the population is going through the roof, chiefly because of open door immigration and the fact the M4 is not as navigable as it used to be.”

Last year Roger Helmer, former head of the delegation for UKIP and Member of the European Parliament, tweeted about why he does not believe that climate change is real… because solar eclipses cause temperature drops.
