Defunding State’s Planned Parenthood Comes to Bite Evangelicals in the….
The State of Wisconsin has been ordered to pay $1.6 million to Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPW) and Affiliated Medical Services (AFS) over a state law regarding admitting privileges for abortion doctors.
According to the law, physicians preforming abortions had to have admitting privileges at a hospital within thirty miles of where the abortion was performed.
Admitting privileges “allow abortion providers to immediately admit their patients at nearby hospitals for treatment in case abortions at their practices led to complications.”
Teri Huyck, president of PPW, wrote a statement , explaining that admitting privileges create “barriers” for women seeking access to safe and legal abortion. $1.6 million in taxpayer money will fund these costs, which is an “expensive bill” for Wisconsin’s taxpayers.
Huyck added: “Funds that would be better spent ensuring that women in Wisconsin had access to basic birth control and preventive health care are instead being wasted on unconstitutional restrictions aimed at blocking access to abortion in our state.”
Governor Scott Walker signed this law back in 2013, and it was ruled unconstitutional in late 2015 by the US Supreme Court.
The Obama administration through the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has proposed a rule that states cannot withhold Title X federal family planning money from certain recipients for any reason other than the provider’s “ability to deliver services to program beneficiaries in an effective manner.”
Title X is a program that ensures the provision of preventative health care and family planning services for an estimated four million Americans; including 85% of patients who have annual incomes of $23,500 of less.
Of those Americans, Planned Parenthood services about 1/3rd which translates to $70 million in annual grants to subsidize birth control, cancer screenings, and assistance with sexually transmitted diseases for Americans who cannot afford for-profit healthcare.
Additionally, Title X does not allow monies to go toward payment of abortions for any reason.
Eleven Republican-controlled states have passed legislation to block federal funding through Title X and redirected that cash to Christian counseling services.
Evangelical House Representatives like Diane Black believes that the “full force of Congress” to “defeat” Title X. Black accused the president of using Title X “to carry out political favors and prop up a scandal ridden abortion provider.”
Black believes the lies concocted by the debunked right-wing propaganda videos published by the Center for Medical Progress
Meanwhile the State of Utah, who has recently chosen to defund Planned Parenthood under the leadership of Governor Gary Herbert was just told to stop.
US District Court Judge Dee Benson ruled that the state cannot block funding to these clinics while litigation is pending.
The judge followed legal precedent according to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals which states that lawmakers and governors cannot impede on the usage of federal funding intended for Planned Parenthood.
